Two episodes into the grind and we are still not ready for Bugsy. Episode 4
is more Route 32 encounters, more Union Cave, more experience points, and
more slow progress toward Azalea Town.
Falkner is behind us. The Zephyr Badge is in the case. But Jess has been
warning me about Bugsy since episode 2, and I am starting to believe her.
The Grind
Grinding is not glamorous. It is repetitive battles against wild Pokemon
until your team hits the levels you need. In Crystal, the stretch between
Violet City and Azalea Town is one of the classic early-game grinding zones.
Route 32 has variety, Union Cave has depth, and both have enough encounters
to build a balanced team if you put in the time.
We are putting in the time.
The Team
Cyndaquil is still the anchor. We added a couple more team members this
episode and last, and Jess is drilling me on type matchups. Bug-types are
weak to Fire, so Cyndaquil should have an easier time than most trainers
would. But Bugsy also has a Scyther, and Scyther hits hard.
Type coverage matters. Team composition matters. I am learning these things
the hard way.
What’s Next
Episode 5 is going to be Azalea Town. If we are ready, we take on Bugsy. If
we are not, we grind more. Jess will decide.
We are also looking at how to catch a wider variety of Pokemon before we
leave this area. Route 32 has some encounters that are worth the time. Union
Cave has surprises. Suggestions welcome in the comments, just no story
spoilers.
The Series
Break has never played a Pokemon game. Jess has loved Pokemon Crystal since
she was a kid. Every episode is Jess teaching Break the game, live on stream,
one gym at a time, until we catch ’em all (or die trying).
