BreakmanX (AKA Matthew Nyquist) founded BreakmanX.com in 2001 after having small video game websites since around 1996. Things really took off in September of 2002 when he started The Game Show with Richie. BreakmanX.com quickly developed a tight knit community of gamers as the crew covered major industry events and interviewed top industry talent. Break later went to the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts to get his MFA in Film and TV Production. He worked in Hollywood for seven years with people like Fred Roos (The Godfather Trilogy, Star Wars) and Dane Davis (The Matrix). He's now gone full circle and returned to Kansas to write and direct a feature film (EyesOpenMovie.com), relaunch The Game Show (BreakmanX.com), and spend his day time hours as an tenured Associate Professor.

I thought this was a pretty interesting topic and I feel that everyone should know about this. Apparently long time reviewer Jeff Gerstmann has been fired from Gamespot due to a low review score. From Kotaku.com We’ve heard an unsettling rumor today from an anonymous tipster that longtime game reviewer Jeff Gerstmann from Gamespot has been let go. That wouldn’t necessarily be newsworthy, but the conditions under which he was allegedly dismissed were. According to the source, Gerstmann was fired "on the spot" due to advertiser pressure for his review of Eidos’ Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. A visit to…

Pre-ordered it at GameStop, and I really do wish I’d have bought something else. That pre-order part should have been the big warning sign. I don’t pre-order games – the third Richie commandment, right after ‘People suck’ and ‘Front-wheel drive sucks’. I’m too skeptical, cynical, and broke to buy a game based solely on marketing and hype. You could have J.C. himself slap me with the right hand of the Lord and I still wouldn’t believe. But somehow Mass Effect slipped through my mental filters, and I ended up early Tuesday morning in GameStop, the first customer of the…

Yes, there is no live show this week, due to Break being out of town. BUT. We have the next best thing. NAUGHTY BITS PART DEUX That is to say, Episode 2. It will be pre-recorded, so unfortunately we will not be able to do call-ins or discuss what’s going on in the chat channel. Unless you can chat back in time, which I don’t think you can, but if you are capable of such a thing, email me and tell me how you do it. We will, however, air the show at the usual airtime of 5 PM Central…

The Microsoft Wireless Racing Wheel, used, for $55 after a few trades. Not bad for a quality accessory from a respected manufacturer. And who’s surprised the racing lemming bought one? Did Picasso buy brushes? But you know what? I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Here’s why. 1.) It’s wireless, except that it isn’t. Microsoft’s misnomer is, at best, optimistic, but more like a complete lie. The pedals have to talk to the wheel, which is done through a cheap RJ11 phone cable. Power can be provided wirelessly via a standard controller power pack, but the force feedback sucks too much…

When you wish upon a star, dreams really do come true. Don’t believe me? This morning, millions of hardcore gamers woke up to find their dearest wish had come true. Sonic has been officially confirmed for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. You heard me right. Motherfucking Sonic. Is in motherfucking Super Smash motherfucking Bros. Brawl. This has been a long-standing desire for many gamers ever since the ill-fated EGM April Fools’ Joke in 2002. A doctored screenshot of Sonic, along with a short article detailing how to unlock Sonic and Tails in Super Smash Bros. Melee, raised the hopes of many,…

I posted the rumor regarding this a few days ago, so I though I should bring you all up to speed since Bungie has now officially left Microsoft. Bungie will still have a huge role at Microsoft, no doubt. This just means they now have to freedom to do whatever they want. I’m really proud of them for attempting to stand on their own feet and become independent. Things like Q’s desired HaloDS might actually have a chance now. Since Microsoft still owns 100% of Halo this specific title will not probably come true, but Bungie could make a new…

***UPDATED*** Kotaku posted an interesting tidbit from Game Informer, "The details on what’s really going on between Microsoft and Halo series developer Bungie are still foggy, but Game Informer helps to brush away some of the fog of future console wars by detailing more specifics on the matter. According to GI, interested parties have purchased the naming rights of the development studio from its parent company, with Microsoft retaining rights to the Halo franchise. No surprise there. GI’s unnamed source, however, had more to say on the rumored split. What’s potentially more interesting is that Microsoft may also retain "right…

I had the honor to play some Halo 3 with our leader, BreakmanX last night. While playing was fun, I think the majority of it was because of our chatting. We got through the first 3 levels, but the game itself left us bored, confused. We found ourselves picking apart little things in each level just to get some entertainment value. However, this IS Halo, and it was everything I was expecting it to be. Johnson and his crashed Pelican Halo 3 is mostly seen as a multiplayer experience. Bungie showed this when it delivered Halo 2. You…

I just watched the premiere episode of Chuck and I must say it is pretty cool.  I’m still not completely sold on the origins of his secret governmental knowledge and all, but the actual show is pretty funny.  The main actor is definitely the best part of the show, and I look forward to what further geekery they present.  From what I’ve read, the creator of the show is an actual geek.   I’ll be watching it next week, that’s for sure. Besides it being a fun show to watch I also noticed a few interesting locations.  First is the Mexican…

DS

So far this is shaping up to be better than the original Sonic Rush, which I absolutely loved. The 3d world is really well blended into the 2d gameplay which is something that I don't think I've seen done quite this well. Every thing about this game just screams the classic gameplay many of us grew up on in the Genesis years. My only complaint is the lame Sonic story and dialog we have all gotten used to in the past decade or so. If you like platformers, Sonic, or own a DS you should go buy this!

My long documented conflict with the 360 is getting a few rather interesting doses of "get-along-juice" today. First of all, my 360 returns from its tumultuous journey to Texas where it was gutted and, presumably, rebuilt. Then as I checked my usual round of URLs I find that Ikaruga AND Rez will be coming to Xbox Live in the near future. I love my Dreamcast and still believe it was taken from us too soon. The fact that Xbox Live is picking up two classics immediately warmed my heart to the console. Ikaruga is one of my favorite games OF…

Since our editor doesn't like me embeding videos, I'll just have to link it for all of you to see. Click HERE to watch the video that was supposed to be embedded. After all the frustration of trying to embed I can barely remember why I'm posting a link to this video in the first place. Well, fans of FF7 will feel all gooey inside as soon as the video starts up. The classic battle theme plays and the familiar beeps and clicks make a return. Could Crisis Core be a great game? Well, sounds and music alone don't make…

Since Tim and I have been harping about the excellence of Luminous Arc on the show and off, I decided it might be a good idea to put the company line here to give you a basic impression. Expect more written content on this game soon. One thousand years ago, dragons and Witches warred against God for the fate of the world. God's power was triumphant, but it was a difficult struggle, and the deity sent Himself into a deep sleep to recover from the terrible wounds he suffered in the battle. Ten years ago, the Church has proclaimed that…

Super Metroid is one of those games. You know, one of those games. A game so drenched in quality that it appears on many "Best Games of All Time" lists along with titles like Chrono Trigger, Ocarina of Time, Super Mario Bros., Final Fantasy VI, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Metal Gear Solid. I purposely stretched out this list so you could see just what level this game is on, because it is on the highest level possible in gaming. I remember my first experience with Super Metroid. Shortly after its release I rented this game…

Life is good. Now that I have a decent job, I can afford an infrequent frivolity from time to time. This, of course, means I renew my subscription to GameFly. God bless those little people. They provide such a wonderful service for such a reasonable price. Sure, they're not the fastest, and they don't always have the best stock, but you can actually rent titles such as Big Brain Academy Wii Degree from them. Is Blockbuster gonna have that shit? Not bloody likely. (They don't. I've looked.) So what did I rent with my first choice? Well, truth be told,…
