Pokemon Crystal Full Playthrough: Jess Taught Me My First Pokemon Game (10 Hours)

There’s a ten hour video on the channel now, and I want to explain why it exists.

I’ve hosted a gaming podcast since 2002, and for that entire run I carried a secret. I had never played a Pokemon game. Not Red, not Blue, not anything. Jess co-hosts our streams and grew up on Pokemon Crystal, and when she found out, she decided this could not stand. She offered to teach me from zero, live, one weekly session at a time. This compilation is the Pokemon Crystal full playthrough of everything so far. Seven episodes in one continuous video.

The individual episodes are all on the channel if you want them in pieces. But the marathon cut has its own appeal. Ten hours of a rookie and a superfan working through a Game Boy Color classic is the kind of thing you put on in the background and let run. What happens in this Pokemon Crystal full playthrough

The short version. I pick Cyndaquil because he looks cool. My first gym battle against Falkner nearly wipes the entire team before a clutch Geodude saves the run, and my starter evolves into Quilava seconds after the win. We make the legendary Bellsprout for Onix trade in Violet City. The Mystery Egg we haul around for hours hatches into Togepi live on stream. In Azalea Town we clear Team Rocket out of the Slowpoke Well and take the Hive Badge off Bugsy. Then it’s through Ilex Forest to Goldenrod City, where the Department Store lives up to the hype, the daycare couple hands us the mysterious Odd Egg, and I get thrown out of the Game Corner for creative slot machine techniques. I went back and cleaned the place out. No regrets.

The team is named after people from the show

Early on we started naming our Pokemon after the hosts, guests, and viewers who make this whole thing run, and now it’s the law of the land. My Cyndaquil is Jack, after Jack Burt0n. Fenris the Geodude is named for Fenris Wolf Retro, and he earned that name by carrying us through the Falkner fight. Maul the Slowpoke licks opposing Pokemon into unconsciousness, which feels right. Logan the Wooper tanks hits way above his weight class, and as of this recording we still have not told the real Logan he’s a Pokemon now. Coury the Jigglypuff joined in Goldenrod, Voultar is on the roster, and the next catch already has a name reserved for another friend of the show.

It started as a joke and became the heart of the series. When Logan refuses to go down, chat isn’t cheering for a Wooper. They’re cheering for Logan. Every catch has stakes now, and the party doubles as a group photo of everybody who’s been part of the show.

Why watch a rookie play a 26 year old game

Because the reactions are real. There are plenty of Crystal playthroughs online, but almost all of them come from people who know the game cold and blow past the moments that are supposed to land. This one runs the opposite direction. Jess has seen every beat of this game a hundred times, so the fun is watching her watch me discover things she’s known since childhood. When Togepi hatched, I had no anime nostalgia to lean on. When the rival turned out to be Giovanni’s son, that was a genuine plot twist to me. When I found out Beedrill is over three feet tall, that was breaking news.

It also works as a beginner’s guide by accident. I ask every question a new player would ask, and Jess answers all of them, from what badges actually do to why trainer battles give more experience than wild ones.
