An interesting point, but I think the precedent you're setting there might be dangerous. I'm not sure "art" should be a qualitative judgment. The fact that something is "art" doesn't mean it's good, and something doesn't have to be good to be "art."

There's nothing in the definition of "art" that would allow for a qualitative evaluation. If something fits the criteria, then it's art. It can be bad art, but it's art nonetheless.

Also, you don't like Fallout 3? That game is a masterpiece!

I agree with 90 percent of what you say. I think that people are quick to say "This game is art!" based solely on a games story alone, or a games graphics alone, but I think there is a " sweet spot" between the two that must be achieved for a game to be "art". For example, I see doom 3 as art, as well as fallout new Vegas, and final fantasy 8, but not fallout 3, Max payne almost made art level if not for the insanity inducing repetitive game play, and skyrim too, for that mater. In both i love the world I find myself in, but It is too repetitive in game play for me to call either art.

That's funny because all I ever hear from people is how amazing Bioshock's story was and how it changed gaming. Too bad the gameplay was horrendously linear, boring, and about 700 steps backwards from System Shock 2.

But of course, nobody would ever DARE attack Bioshock! Unless you want to get attacked like I'm about to be.

This is something I think about a lot. I think you touch on some fascinating stuff here, Andrew. I need to think a bit more to have a more in depth response, but I'm really glad you wrote this.

In reply to <a href="https://www.breakmanx.com/does-story-in-games-matter/#comment-1524">Vampiric</a>.

Why, exactly? Did Mario need a story to be a masterpiece? And I doubt when they were making Mario they specifically intended to make a game without a good story.

I suspect that what gamers call "story" is often an amalgamation of the world-building components of a game. Of course it's important to feel that the world you're playing in is compelling and arresting, and makes you want to go deeper into it. But the presence of a linear, structured narrative doesn't strike mas the most important thing in the world. Video games can convey meaning and emotion without them.
